OM VINEN

Nizza DOCG Costemonghisio 2020 er en af de nyere vine i Mauro Sebaste’s portefølje. Vinen er lavet på 100% Barbera fra marker omkring byen Vinchio i Asti. Markerne ligger i 280 m højde og er syd-øst vendt. Som det foreskrives i Nizza DOCG, må der kun dyrkes Barbera på markerne.

Som alle Mauro’s andre vine, har druerne til denne også været igennem en nænsom udvælgelse både i marken og på sorteringsbordet. Macerationen varer 8-10 dage i temperaturregulerede ståltanke med daglig pumping over og punching down. Derefter lagrer vinen 12 måneder i tonneaux og yderligere 6 måneder i flaske inden frigivelse.

Aromaerne, der møder en, er blandt andet røde frugter, røde bær og krydderier. Drik Nizza DOCG Costemonghisio til vildt, en steg eller sæsonens oste.

Nizza DOCG Costemonghisio 2020 kan drikkes nu, men har også potentiale til et par år mere på langs.

“Dark chocolate, plums, coffee and walnuts on the nose, with a touch of cinnamon stick. Juicy, plush and chocolaty, with a full body and creamy tannins. Balances out the high alcohol. Drink and enjoy.”

“Nizza DOCG Costemonghisio 2020 has a ruby color of medium intensity. The nose is a little reserved and benefits from aeration. It then expresses the notes of crushed strawberry, fresh wild strawberry, roasted red cherry, fresh morello cherry, crushed blackcurrant, blackberry, as well as dried mint, vanilla, liquorice, clove, white pepper, chocolate, toasted hazelnut, eucalyptus and a fine floral bouquet (rose petals, violet, peony).

The palate is expressive and savoury, with lots of gourmandise. It offers notes of wild strawberry, juicy morello cherry, raspberry coulis, red plum, crème de cassis, as well as chocolate with mint, cherry in chocolate, wild mint, liquorice, a touch of toasted hazelnut, cinnamon and vanilla (with a fine hint of pepper in the background) and fresh flowers (peony, rose petals).

The finish offers good persistence, freshness, and a nice salivating acidity. The tannins are melted and supple. Gourmandise and sapidity.”

“A new project for Sebaste which was released first in 2015, thus this is their third vintage produced.

Here we are in the village of Vinchio in the area of Monghisio, one between the most esteemed areas for Barbera. The soil is sandy in the first 40-50 cm then transitions to tuff, so it bears excellent characteristics of the Barbera grape.

This vintage is a mix of 60-70-year-old plants blended with some newer plantings with the newer ones are clonal selections for highest quality and lowest yields. This is dark and dense revealing loads of class and an alluring bouquet of deep raspberry, leather, hints of underbrush and a smattering of brown tobacco. With time indications of minerality emerge.

Lovely balance with delicious fruit, soft tannin and an accent of acidity make this a terrific food wine. I find the tonneaux treatment particularly attractive as it adds an excellent amount of tannin for midterm cellaring, while not overdoing the toast aspect. Seriously delicious!
